The Virtual Secretary

A software agent is a program that effectively uses the network and remote processing sites to conduct differnt tasks on behalf of its originator. If required, the agent can communicate with the environments and/or other agents. This also includes replication of agents and possibly also propagation of processes. An important problem with an agent-based solution is security. Security might be difficult to attain if worm-like software is allowed to intrude other hosts. One approach to partly deal with the security issues is to have general agents running on all hosts that might be potential hosts for an agent in action. The propagation of agents could then become a question of transferring a user model (or task description) that includes information necessary to start or continue specific tasks. We also expect that this approach will reduce network consumption. Instead of propagating the whole agent, only the user model will be transferred. On the other hand, however, if these kinds of software succeed, the network traffic will increase due to the new services offered. This paper presents the first version of the Virtual Secretary.
